The South West Area were thrilled to welcome Adam Garcia to Plymouth for our Autumn area event. The Australian actor, singer and dancer led the masterclass workshops at Tor Bridge High School in Plymouth on Sunday 3rd November. Fifty students of all ages and abilities from across Devon and Cornwall came together and took part in the classes.
The first session of the day was a technical advanced tap class for our experienced tappers. Adam spent time working with our students on their rhythm and techniques and was soon putting our enthusiastic dancers through their paces with come technical and challenging amalgamations and routines.
Whilst the tap students were immersed in their class our younger students were enjoying a fun and enthusiastically delivered musical theatre session by local teacher Nina Jaram. Confidence building exercises, as well as singing and dance routines from ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘Les Miserables’ were enjoyed by all
Next up, Musical Theatre with Adam for our students nine years and up. Adam started with warm up techniques which set the scene for the afternoon. This was followed by character improvisation, where students embraced characterisation to inspire their movement. Students were then taught the full musical theatre style dance routine of the great Fosse number ‘Rhythm of Life’. Everything came together at end of the afternoon which finished with the complete musical theatre routine of Rhythm of Life from the musical Sweet Charity this challenged and thrilled our dancers, teachers and parents.
Adam took time to answer questions about his career and the dance profession, and to pose for photos with all the dancers. His passion for dance will leave a lasting impression on our aspiring dancers.
An enjoyable day was had by all. Thank you to Adam for delivering the fantastic classes, to our additional lecturer of the day Nina Jaram and to all our students and teachers who came along and supported the event.
