I started ballet classes with the City Academy of Ballet, Peterborough, at the age of 8, firstly RAD up to grade 4 and later the Russian Style syllabus of the Federation of Russian Classical Ballet (FRCB). With some further study in London with the Harlequin Ballet Company I passed my first teaching exam with the FRCB in 1964 and took over as principal of the City Academy.
I took a break from teaching in the early 70’s but reopened the City Academy in 1976 when I started teaching the Classic Ballet (Russian Style) syllabus of the NATD. I passed my associate and member (now licentiate) exams in 1979 and fellowship in 1983. I was honoured to be appointed an examiner of Classic Ballet in 1998 and later to be elected Senior Examiner wherein I work to maintain the integrity of the Russian style. As a fan of contemporary dance I was delighted with the introduction to NATD of the contemporary syllabus which we also follow in my school and which I also enjoy examining.
Positions Held: Classic Ballet senior examiner, Theatrical branch examiner.

I joined Highams School of Dancing at 4 years old and studied ballet. We also did a bit of tap and stage dance and performed in biennial shows at a local theatre. as I progressed into the senior end of the school, our group performed in cabarets and also at the Shaftsbury Avenue Theatre in ‘An Evening with Faith Brown’, if anyone remembers her!
As a teenager I discovered Chorus Line, Flashdance, Fame and Footloose. all of this obviously ignited a passion in me for dance and the creativity of producing a show. I then went to study my Associate and Licentiate Ballet with Joyce Williams and then joined my former school as an assistant teacher, taking over completely about 25 years ago.
Over the years I have added to my Ballet qualifications, studying and achieving Stage Branch Tap and Modern up to Fellowship level, Freestyle to Associate level and a Diploma in Contemporary Dance and Gymnastic Dance. Our school has expanded and my daughter Lucy now runs the majority of the administrative side which has afforded me to luxury of concentrating on the ‘best bits’ of dance – choreography, teaching and examining.
Positions Held: Theatrical branch examiner.

Over the past 40 years of being a member of the NATD, I have met many like-minded passionate dancing teachers from both the Ballroom and Theatrical branches. Being based in the Midlands has enabled me to travel both north and south over the years, in order to take full advantage of all that the National has to offer when it comes to workshops and lecture days.
My pupils and students have been able to benefit from the knowledge and experiences I have gathered and will continue to do so, as I never want to stop learning, there are always new challenges in the world of dance. I have been a member of both the Theatrical and Ballroom area committees of the North Midland area in recent years, helping to provide local events for members and pupils to attend.
As part of the council of management I have learnt so much about the running of our association, whilst doing my best to assist with the introduction of new initiatives, which will provide members with new business opportunities and yet still embracing the key traditional syllabus foundations the NATD was built upon.

I started ballroom dance classes aged 4 and took the NATD amateur exams with my teacher, Ann Andrew, in Nottingham. At 16 years old I began studying for professional exams, and took classes and private lessons of my own. Whilst studying at university, I continued to work for my professional exams and gained Fellowships in Ballroom, Latin American and Classical, and Licentiate in Freestyle. In May 1988, I began running my own dance school on a part time basis, at the same time working full time as a primary school teacher, and eventually as the Deputy Headteacher of an Infant and nursery school in Derby.
I continued to improve my knowledge and skills of dance by attending lectures and congresses and have successfully trained many candidates for NATD exams for more than 30 years. I have also successfully trained many candidates for their professional exams. More recently, having retired from school teaching in 2015, I have entered pupils into social competitions and, for the past three years, The NATD Medallist of the Year, creating lots of fun and some success. For the past three years I have also been a member of The North Midland Ballroom Area committee, helping with the planning, preparation and organisation of area events. In August 1998 I was honoured to be invited to become an examiner for the NATD and after a successful interview I was appointed. I have held this privileged position for 21 years and thoroughly enjoy visiting schools around the country to examine some excellent dancers and encourage the next generation of the NATD. My number one priority has always been to enjoy all I do with dance and to try my best to promote this enjoyment to others.
Outside of dancing I enjoy taking my dog for long walks and visiting places in the UK especially The Lake District. I also like meeting friends for meals, concerts and theatre shows and at home I keep myself busy with decorating, needlecraft and cooking new recipes.

I started dancing at the age of 7 at the Mary and Molly Richardson School of Dance, now known as County Dance, in Reading. Just a few weeks after joining the children’s beginners class I found myself taking my first medal test with the NATD. Some short weeks later I was encouraged to take part in my first NATD medal competition at the iconic Watford Colosseum. I have been dancing ever since and have continued to take exams and participate in medallist competitions.
From there I went on to compete on the open circuit where my love for dance only grew. I was very fortunate to have the support and guidance of Mary Richardson and the rest of the County team which only fuelled my competitive career helping me to achieve many years of continued success. I have also had the privilege of spending many hundreds, if not thousands, of hours training under some of the worlds most decorated and respected teachers, coaches and mentors that the dancing world has to offer.
My favourite memories include winning the U21 ten dance championships at the Closed UK and of course dancing with my wife Anna, in many open, national and international championships at some of the most beautiful and world renowned competitions. My proudest memories include dancing in the finals of the British National Championships at Blackpool, the finals of the Closed UK championships and of course International Rising Stars semi finals.

Before I became an examiner myself, I was always incredibly anxious of who would be sent to our school for exam days.
You work so hard with and for your pupils for this one day and you are desperate for it go well, for them and for yourself.
Now I am the examiner, I only ever want to put the students I come to see and the teacher at ease, for them to be and do their best.
I love bopping to the tunes as I write forms, I love seeing what your school is all about and learning about you as a principal. You help me learn to become a better examiner and teacher myself, by allowing me in. I also strive to write personalised feedback to each student I examine – things they are wonderful at and things to drive them forward. I think it is so important for students to have some in depth comments when they have worked so hard for this one day.
I have had some great feedback from the schools I have been out to visit and I really can’t wait to come visit more.
I am a Freestyle and Street examiner, teaching purely these two genres in my own school. I am a Fellow in both styles and a committee member with the NATD too.

My first studios opened in Birmingham mid 1976 and was launched as total NATD school which my studios today enjoy the same facility.
As a full time school we enjoy the involvement of medallist events including Blackpool and totally support Congress.

I took my first ballet lesson at the age of 3 and have not stopped dancing since! I qualified in my ballet associate NATD at the age of 16. After spending a short time training at the Ballet Rambert, and then a period dancing abroad, I came home to start training again as I knew my passion was to teach. Over the years I worked hard and gained lots of NATD qualifications, including Fellowships.
During this busy period I got married and started a family. Soon afterwards I opened my own school which I run at various venues across the West Midlands. Neat Feet School of Dance prides itself on quality and development – our school motto is ‘keep your hearts dancing’. We have performed at many events including Disney Land and Birmingham Hippodrome. We stage regular show in addition to taking our NATD exams.
I was appointed an examiner for the NATD a few years ago. It is a great honour to stand and work as an examiner for the NATD and it really is the ‘icing on the cake’. It takes a great deal of determination, commitment and hard work to get to this level and I appreciate those people who have helped me along the way. Hard work really does pay off!

I first became a member of the NATD after attending a seminar with my former school partner Ann Goodwin, who had been trained and taught Modern and Tap in this method. I was approached by Maude Wells who suggested I should take my qualifications with the association.
I later became an examiner for the NATD at the instigation of Cynthia Haslam and Eileen Meacock. I am extremely grateful to these remarkable teachers for their help and advice, without whom I would not have enjoyed my interesting past and present career with the NATD.

I remember my first ballet class aged 3, instantly loving the music, movement and the sense of being taken to another world. Decades later, nothing has changed – I still love to dance. I trained in all Ballroom and Theatrical genres and took my first professional exams in Ballet and Tap in 1976. With CPD I added Modern Stage, Ballroom, Latin American, Classical Sequence, Freestyle, Rock and Roll, Alternative Rhythms, Contemporary and Gymnastic Dance.
Throughout my career I have enjoyed teaching all genres to both children and adults, I also enjoyed working in school with children (KS1-4) with special needs, including those on the Autistic Spectrum. In 2015 I was proud to be appointed as a Dual Examiner in both Ballroom and Theatrical branches, a new and exciting challenge.
